Do You Have A List Of Personal Values?

Are personal values really that important to think about? I’ll let Gandhi answer that question, “Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.”

I also like what Roy Disney said, “It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.”

What Are Your Personal Values?

So what are your values? Very few people get asked that question, but we are constantly living our lives through our values. When you take the time to determine your values, you will develop a new level of self-awareness and clarity that will change your life. Do you believe that?

Your values are what determine your character, your actions, your intentions, and much more. But without identifying your values, how will you know when you’re out of sync with your personal foundation? Not knowing the foundation of who you are can result in an unstable life.

Your Values Are Your Foundation

Determine your personal values is no simple task. If we are to take this exercise seriously, much thought and intention need to be put into it. These values will ultimately help you withstand the trials and tribulations, the temptations and threats of life.

In order for that to come true, you need a firm and healthy foundation. Similar to a building’s foundation, our values need to be deep, reinforced by habits, and periodically inspected to make sure they remain strong. Today you can begin to set your foundation and I want to help you.

What Happens If You Don’t Know Your Personal Values?

I think most of us live our lives through a great set of personal values. These values have brought us success, health, good relationships and much more. But it’s when we are repeatedly faced with challenges to our values that knowing what we stand for is key.

I’m not talking about infidelity or homicide here. I’m talking about compromising on things far less significant (or are they). If a value you have is creativity but lately you haven’t been engaging that value, that’s a compromise. Maybe being courageous is a value of yours. Yet, you find yourself on the “sidelines” lately. Let’s say open-mindedness is really important to you but at work, you’ve been locked in on your way for too long.

When you write out your values and take the time to reflect on them (to see how you are doing honoring your values), these little compromises will come to light. Then you can immediately do something about it. Like I said before, it’s not easy to come up with a firm values list. That’s why I created this Personal Values Guide to make it easier for you.
