Hey there, Kajaled here. Welcome to the next episode of the Blue Shirt Leadership Podcast and I am excited to be here with you today because we are going to talk about one of those things that people might get a little bit frustrated with or a little bit tired of, and that is goals. But before you flip the podcast, before you change the episode, go on to the next episode or a new show.
I'm going to tell you a quick story and then I'm going to dive into an insight about how to accomplish your goals. Actually, I'm going to give you two, two little insights to help you and then you can run with them for the rest of really your life. It is that impactful and that helpful.
It was 2018 I started writing my, 2019 I started writing my book and it actually has, uh, had a different title than it has now. And as, as I began to write it. I got all kinds of insights and ideas of what I should write, but I didn't have a very good plan in place. And so I did something, kind of by accident, I decided to create a 13 week plan.
Or, in other words, roughly a 90 day plan. And in that plan was a few components. One was the number of words I'd write in a given day, the number of words I write in a given week, and how long I wanted to spend writing. And that was about it. I'd already outlined the chapters of the book, I had some good ideas, I had some things written out, I had some interviews I'd done, the research I'd done.
So things were pretty lined up to write this book. So the intention was, in a 13 week period, to write a whole book. Now if, if you're listening to this and going, I don't want to write a book, I don't care about a book, just bear with me because this will work for any goal that you have as well. So my goal was 5, 000 words per week for 13 weeks, which gives you 50, 60, 5, 000 words.
Right, so 65, 000 words, which is a pretty decent length book. And 5, 000 words, if you've ever written a blog post, is about two and a half blog posts. Decent length blog posts. Or remember in college or in high school when you had to write 15 word essays? 1500 word essays? That's all it is. It's three of those.
Not a lot. So can you do that consistently? Can you do three of those consistently for 13 weeks? I could and I believe that if you have a book In your mind that you want to get out there and you've done the research the prep work You can do it. You can pull it off. So there's a little motivation for you to write that book But what's the point?
Well, the point is that I did it. First of all, I got that draft done. Was the draft perfect? Nope. Did I rewrite it? Yep. But, I didn't have to rewrite a ton, first of all. And second of all, you're going to have to rewrite any book that you write. And any goal that you're going after that's an ongoing process is going to have to have new iterations or new adjustments to it.
Here's the point that I'm making here. When you set goals, set a goal that's a 90 day increment. Now this came from my own idea, but it also later I found out comes from a book called the 12 week year And I highly recommend you read that book, but in the book they talk about Planning your goals in 12 week increments with the 13th week essentially or a quarterly increment being the week of review And the reason that this works, and the reason that I want you to apply it today, right now, as soon as this episode is over, which will be shortly, so bear with me again.
I don't, I don't make these episodes long because I want you to be able to run with information and use it. The way it works is for 12 weeks, you're going after the specific thing. So for instance, in my business right now, I'm launching my blue shirt community. And so for the first half of this quarter, which is basically over now, I've been building up to launch tomorrow.
I'm launching. Now tomorrow is going to be a different day when you hear this. But anyway, tomorrow I'm launching. And what that means is now I'm at the halfway point of my quarter, and I'm moving forward, or my 12 week year, and I'm moving forward into the second half of my 12 week year. So if you picture it this way, You set a goal and you're like, okay, it's gonna take me a year to do this.
I'm gonna pursue this for a year. The first half you're preparing for, you're building everything up, you're getting everything dialed in, and then the second year you're delivering on it, and you're executing and making the things happen. Well, in this concept you shrink it all into 12 weeks, and that's what I did.
I shrunk everything that I needed to get done into the first six weeks of the year, and then the next, the latter six weeks, the end of this month through the end of March, It's going to be about continuing to promote and execute on this so that my community will continue to fill. Now, you might be resisting this because you're going well I have goals that are going to take more than 90 days, well great, break those goals into 90 day increments.
The point here is that it keeps you locked in and focused when you choose 90 days. That's the key, is that you don't lose focus because you're doing that 12 week time period with a one week review at the end to see what's happened, what needs to change, what adjustments you want to make. So let's say you have a weight loss goal.
Alright, I have a weight loss goal, it's a 6 month goal basically to lose 25 pounds, so 2 quarters. I have This quarter to lose probably about 15 to 17 pounds because it's gonna go a little faster this quarter than the second But I don't focus on losing 25 this quarter because I'm not gonna do it It's not gonna happen it and it wouldn't really be healthy the way I'm doing this To do it.
So yes, I still have that goal of 25 pounds, but I'm breaking it down into two increments. And the increments are actually different and the way that I'm going to approach the second half will be different as well. So when you don't break it up into that window, you're hurting yourself because you're taking strategies for the 90 day or for the the whole six month period or the whole year long period that aren't going to fit As you get closer to the middle the three quarter point and the end.
So when you break it up into quarters or 12 week years, it's far more effective. Okay, so here's the challenge for you. Apply this now. But, the second component, I told you I was going to tell you two tips. The main tip is the 12 week year. The second tip is what does it look like when you get that result?
Let's say you have a goal to lose weight, you have a goal to generate a certain amount of revenue in your business, you have a goal as it relates to your family, as it relates to your church, your ministry, your employees. Whatever, whatever your goal is, I want you to think about, okay, I'm going to break it down into 90 day increments or just 90 days, because that's all it'll take.
And then ask yourself, what does it look like when I've achieved this? The moment that I have achieved this result for me, I know what it's going to look like when I've lost that 25 pounds. I know I'm going to have that six pack dialed in, I know that I'm going to feel fantastic, my face is going to look skinnier, and I kind of have this little visual going on in my mind of walking into my bedroom with my shirt off, kind of, you know, looking ripped and looking good, and my wife seeing me and noticing and being like, wow, you look great.
Okay? That's the end of it for me with my 12 week, two times, really, 12 week years, twice, to lose a 25 pounds. What is the point of doing this? When you establish a clear point of, I've arrived, quote unquote, that you've made it, it gets your unconscious mind engaged in the process. So two things are happening here.
Number one, you've told your unconscious mind, we've got 12 weeks to pull off this goal. That's it. We're done. Twelve weeks. We gotta do it in this window. And it creates urgency because every week represents a year, basically, if you think. Er, not a year. It represents a month, basically. So you're trying to get the amount of work done, metaphorically, that you would in a month in a week.
That's the premise of the book. Point here is you create that urgency, you create that consistency and motivation when you set that goal, but then you engage your unconscious mind in the process by telling it what it will look like to have achieved the goal. And then you consistently pursue the tasks every week in that 12 week year, and then you consistently think about what it will feel like, what it will sound like, what it will look like to accomplish the moment you've accomplished that, alright?
So, Write those two things down. What's your 90 day window and what is the goal? Number two is what will it look like when you've achieved it? What will it look like, sound like, and feel like that you've achieved it? Put it all down on paper or digitally type it out, whatever works for you, and then go after it.
It will help you tremendously. Last thing to share with you, your unconscious mind is the goal setter. I screwed it up. Rewind that. I'm not even going to rewind it because I don't edit these things, but Your unconscious mind is the goal setter. Your unconscious mind is the goal getter. Okay, so you're setting it at the 90 day or the 12 week year.
orientation, and then you're going to go get it with the idea of what it's going to feel like to achieve it. Alright? So, that's all I have for you today. Apply this right now. Take the time right now to start thinking about it at a minimum, but it would be ideal if you took the time and just wrote it out.
If you're driving, get to a place where you can write this down because your mind is spinning right now and your unconscious has all kinds of brilliant ideas for you about these goals that you want to achieve. Write them, write it down. Now, if you want to dive deeply into this process of how to accomplish your goals, how to set your goals, what SMART goals are and the accountability tied to them, what toward a goal is versus away from a goal, and all these other components of SMART goals, I want to invite you to take my SMART goals course.
I have it discounted right now for just 19. 95 instead of normally 79. 95, so I'll put that in the show notes.
