Are you committed to achieving your goals?

Research shows that by this point in February, 80% of us will have dropped our New Year's goals. That means that 8 out of every 10 people have given up on whatever was so important just two months ago.

While I'm not surprised by this, I do find it to be a bit disheartening. I love goals. I love creating them, I love figuring out how I'm going to achieve them, and I love tracking the data and monitoring my progress. But clearly, I am in the minority here.

I don't want to talk so much about goals today, but I want to talk about what we can do to help each other be successful. One of the four pillars of the Leadership Framework that I created is Accountability.

If you've spent any time around Blue Shirt Coaching, I'm sure you've heard me talk about it. Accountability is such a crucial part of achieving goals, becoming successful, and living the way we were meant to live. In my book, Right Now Leadership, there is an entire section dedicated to Accountability. I talk about both passive and active accountability, but I also talk about something called Self-Commitment or self-accountability, and that's what I want to focus on right now.

Self-commitment is where you actually move forward toward accomplishing what you say you are going to do. It's the point of no return.

You stop talking about how you're going to go sky-diving, and you actually jump out of the plane. You set your alarm for 5:30 am every morning, and you actually get out of bed when the alarm goes off. I did a quick Google search of the main reasons why people abandon their goals by this time of the year. My search turned up reasons such as unrealistic goals, lack of motivation, lack of planning, and lack of accountability.

These are all reasons that can be easily remedied if you made the commitment to yourself that you were going to accomplish your goals. Take a moment to think about what you were hoping to accomplish in 2023. Have you made any steps toward achieving your goals? Or are you part of the 80% that have abandoned them?

I want to encourage you to recommit yourself to your goals. Commit to taking the steps, to doing the work to follow through. Commit to not quit. Commit to taking some risks. Commit to empowering your employees. Commit to taking time to develop your leadership skills. Commit to growth.
